Common sense mediation of civil and family disputes, informed by four decades of courtroom experience

As both a lawyer and a judge, I found particular pleasure in unravelling the most complex legal problems. As a judge, as much as I liked deciding those cases, even more rewarding was the opportunity to help lawyers and litigants find their own solutions to those problems. I like to think that many of the best decisions I made over my 11 years on the bench were the ones I didn’t make, but that the parties made with my assistance. A judge, of course, has limited opportunities in this regard, and must tread carefully when trying to move the parties towards settlement. A mediator is not so constrained. I welcome the opportunity to trade my adjudicative hat for a facilitative one.
